Understanding College Athletic Associations

As you begin your college journey, it’s important to understand the different athletic associations and what they offer student-athletes in terms of competition level, scholarships, and opportunities.

NCAA – National Collegiate Athletic Association

The NCAA includes about 1,300 colleges and universities across the United States and Canada. It oversees the athletic programs of many large and small schools and is divided into three divisions:

  • Division I & II schools can offer athletic scholarships.
  • Division III schools do not offer athletic scholarships but may provide other forms of financial aid.

NAIA – National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics

The NAIA represents approximately 250 smaller colleges and universities. It offers a competitive athletic environment and holds 28 national championships across various sports.

  • NAIA schools can offer athletic scholarships, often with more flexibility in recruitment and eligibility.

The NAIA is based in Kansas City, Missouri.

NJCAA – National Junior College Athletic Association

The NJCAA includes around 500 two-year colleges, also known as junior or community colleges. It organizes and governs 53 national championships across multiple sports and divisions.

  • Some NJCAA divisions offer athletic scholarships, while others do not depending on the school and sport.

The NJCAA is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina.
